This new project aims to create housing for 200 workers and their families with the option for growth if and when the need arises to house more workers. When tasked with designing a worker’s village after a powerful and destructive hurricane, it was necessary to figure out what was most important. In this case, resiliency and connection are the two most important factors. Resiliency to resist future storms and survive super storms with minimal damage, and connection so that the workers can get to where they need to go on and around the island easily.
Now more than ever, The Bahamas needs people who are willing and able to work, but there aren’t many places for them to live, especially on the Abaco Cays, categorized by its high cost of living due to it being a popular destination for wealthy people and celebrities alike to own second or third vacation homes here. Nigh Creek Village aims to create an affordable area for workers to live while not making them feel sectioned off from the rest of Hopetown.
